About the Office

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides legal services and advice in a wide variety of areas of the law, including business/corporate, employment, public records, open meetings, health, litigation, administrative, intellectual property, and civil rights. The OGC is also the only office that has the authority to approve contracts on behalf of the University. The services provided by the OGC include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide advice and support to the FIU Board of Trustees on governance and legal issues.
  • Draft and review contracts, including affiliation agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.
  • Advise Division of Human Resources on personnel matters.
  • Coordinate responses to subpoenas/court orders and other requests.
  • Provide guidance in responding to public records requests.
  • Answer legal questions posed by the University community regarding matters affecting the University.
  • Train and educate FIU staff and faculty members on legal matters.
  • Represent FIU in judicial and administrative forums.
  • Respond to concerns that University employees may be committing fraud or failing to comply with the law.
  • Represent employees contacted by federal or state investigators in interviews and agency processes.
  • Work closely with the University Compliance Office and other departments with compliance functions such as the Equal Opportunity Program Office, Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management, and the Office of Internal Audit.

Requests for Legal Advice

Requests for advice can be sent via campus email to an OGC attorney, via fax to (305) 348-3272, or through interoffice mail to the OGC at PC 511. Requests for legal advice are assigned and prioritized depending on the nature of the advice sought.
